American writing is distinctive, and diverse, and comes in many forms from across the nations. As the only museum devoted to American writers and their works, AWM connects visitors with their favorite authors and writings from more than five centuries, while inspiring the discovery of new works of every type – poetry, lyrics, speeches, drama, fiction, nonfiction, journalism, and more.

Current exhibits include Dark Testament: A Century of Black Writers on Justice, which has been extended through May 5, 2024. The new exhibit Level Up: Gamers & Writers will open May 24, 2024.

The American Writers Festival is taking place May 19, 2024 at the Harold Washington Library.

The Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island (previously FirstMerit Bank Pavilion) is a huge outdoor amphitheatre that has a venue capacity of over 30,000 and located on the unique man-made peninsula of Northerly Island. The Huntington Bank Pavilion was open in 2005 and is surrounded by the beautiful views of the Chicago skyline, and Lake Michigan.

This incredible venue is home to many thrilling and exciting events during its concert season, from the biggest stars in music. Before it’s expansion the venue was initially named Charter One Pavilion. The expansion, which took place in 2013, was designed to increase the seating capacity from 8,000 to over 30,000. During the expansion the venue stage was re-positioned to face the lawn, and enhanced audio systems were placed into the theatre.

About the Cadillac Palace Theatre

The original Palace Theatre, designed by legendary theatre architects the Rapp Brothers, opened at the corner of Randolph and LaSalle Streets on October 4th, 1926. The theatre opened originally as the flagship of vaudeville’s Orpheum Circuit, featuring stars such as Bob Hope, Mae West, and Jack Benny.

The theatre’s stunning interior featured a lobby with huge decorative mirrors and white marble, great wall surfaces enhanced with gold leaf and wood decorations, and plush, roomy seats.

Throughout its history, the 2,500 seat theatre has acted as a vaudeville theatre, movie palace, banquet hall, rock venue, and Broadway theatre.

In 1999, the venue was completely restored and renovated and reopened as the Cadillac Palace Theatre. Since then, the theatre has been the home to several hits, including The Producers, Mamma Mia!, The Lion King, The Color Purple, Mary Poppins, Shrek the Musical, and Aladdin!

About the Museum Campus

Chicago’s amazing Museum Campus houses three of the city’s historic institutions in one place! Spend a day exploring the natural world at the Field Museum, the underwater world of aquatic animals at the Shedd Aquarium, and space at the Adler Planetarium.

Field Museum
The Field Museum was founded in 1893 to house the biological and anthropological collections assembled for the World’s Columbian Exposition. Now one of the world’s greatest and largest museums of natural history, its collection has grown to an incredible 24 million objects, including dinosaur fossils, ancient mummies, exquisite gemstones, and much, much more!

Shedd Aquarium
The Shedd Aquarium combines the best of the early 20th century “age of aquarium” characteristics – a diverse, global animal collection surrounded by amazing architecture – with 21st century advances in animal care and environments.

Adler Planetarium
The Adler Planetarium, which opened in 1930, is America’s first planetarium and has become a recognized leader in science education. Special exhibitions, immersive theater programs, and events such as lectures and viewing parties allow visitors to journey through the vast universe. The museum is home to three full-size theaters, including the Grainger Sky Theater, fashioned as a virtual observatory, the all-digital projection Definiti Space Theater for the 3D Universe Theater.
